We Build Commerical Song

I knew that song in the ‘We Build’ Dodge, Chrysler, GM commercial sounded familiar. It’s “Lovely Allen” by Holy Fuck.

Brandon Chandler At Mississippi Studios

As is typical in RIP City, musicians retreat to their basements during the rainy winters, honing their creative juices, only to emerge alongside the “Blue Sunshine” of the spring with a new album to show for their hibernation.

Such is the case with Brandon Chandler. This local singer songwriter has been MIA for months, working on a new album with his band, The Revival. However, I’m happy to say the CD Make.Love.Sing. is complete (it sounds great!) and Brandon will make his return to the stage this Thursday night at the newly reopened Mississippi Studios.

I met Brandon last summer at a show at the Doug Fir. I was immediately impressed with his music, reminiscent of Jason Mraz, but more soulful. While I enjoyed his first album After All This Time, the new stuff surpasses the old. There’s sure to be plenty of the new tunes played Thursday. And if you haven’t been to the remodeled Mississippi Studios, this is a great time to do it. The new space is amazing and hardly recognizable as the old room, until you hear the sound (the sound techs are top notch).

Kirk Duncan, Krista Herring, and Ezza Rose share the bill that night. It’s an early show with a 7:30pm start time, so make sure you don’t show up too late. Tickets are only $10 and available at the door.

The Dimes EP Release at Doug Fir

The Dimes will celebrate the release of a new EP with a show at the Doug Fir Lounge this Saturday, Nov. 1. The Dimes will be sharing with their fans new tracks from the New England EP, which will feature a new mix of “The Liberator,” originally available on an EP released earlier this year, “The Ballad of Winslow Homer,” a recent demo, and the band’s cover of John Lennon’s “Watching The Wheels.” Most exciting about this release, at least to me, is the band’s decision to include “Clara” on the album. The song is about American Red Cross organizer Clara Barton and is one of my favorites from the new material that The Dimes have been working on for their next album, due early next year.

Derby and Matt Sheehy are also on the bill, ensuring an awesome night of music as you recover from the Halloween debauchery of the night prior. The NW Noise Boys will be there for an interview with Derby (excited about that) and to check out some of Portland’s best live music.

Bought Raw Power by Iggy Pop and The Stooges

Yep, yep, I bought Raw Power by Iggy Pop and The Stooges this afternoon at a second-hand record store here on Hawthorne. I love this album. I think this CD is the remastered one, not the Bowie mix; which I think Iggy didn’t care much for.
