Sasquatch Report: Day 2
Day two; good morning sun! Oh heavenly crap it was hot in my tent! Camping at Vantage Point park seemed like a strange compromise on Saturday night – read Sasquatch Report Day 1 – but I actually got great sleep and having a Shell gas station nearby with a clean bathroom was a nice break from Sasquatch’s over-used porto-potties. I got to see what the frat boys acted like in daylight, but nothing interesting happened that morning other than a sorority-looking girl yelling out, “…where’s those sausages! I need a sausage!“.

I was really looking forward to the second day at Sasquatch because it was my first full-day of the festival, I missed more than half of the acts the day before because I was slow leaving Portland; damn my laziness. After getting my bag lightly searched (seriously, next time I’m sneaking alcohol in), I made my way to the Yeti stage to see Truckasuraus. They’re a goofy bunch, but fucky-a-dee-fuck-fuck they really like to use the word fuck in every sentence; it was cool though, I had my beer, the day was starting and Truckasuraus put on a very enthusiastic show for the crowd; which is always fun to see.
Next on the list of bands to check out were The Heavenly States. NW Noise had interviewed The Heavenly States just before Sasquatch and they put on a rocking show at The Doug Fir just after that interview, so I was expecting a great time at the Yeti stage. I wasn’t disappointed. The Heavenly States quickly vaulted into their new material and near the end of the show played a request from the audience for Morning Exercise from their new album, Delayer. Yeah, we’re really big fans of The Heavenly States (nerd alert!) and they absolutely nailed Sasquatch!

The Cold War Kids took their unique sound and quirky antics to the main stage next, and as expected they played their hit, Hang Me Out to Dry, but also played new songs; including one named Mexican Drugs.

Tegan & Sara cut loose to a very appreciative crowd. This was the moment when most of the women in the crowd were holding hands.
The Presidents were up next, and it was odd hearing Lump and rest of their cute songs in a festival setting. Yeah, they’re fun and amazing pop songs, but it brings back middle school and some weird moments. Moving on…

Oh did the next band tease the crowd: The Kooks. This band was loooooved by so many people at Sasquatch, including a very healthy number of beautiful women. Unfortunately. sound problems seemed to have plagued the Yeti stage at that moment because their set was delayed by a good 35-45 minutes. Quite a lot of people took off after the wait because the moment had passed; like making out at a bar with no finish. The two songs I heard from The Kooks were amazing but I had to take off to see Death Cab on the main stage.
I’ve never been to a Death Cab show so I don’t know what it’s like when Death Cab is on and when they are having an off night. That evening, to me, they were on and I loved the long jamming on I Will Possess Your Heart; it was a perfect song for the perfect view of the Gorge at that moment. I most definitely need to go to another Death Cab show in the future, but who knows, maybe my experience that night was biased by the goods people in the small crowd around me were passing around…so yeah, I barely remember Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks.
Which brings me The Cure. Another band I’d never seen live, and even though I’d listened to their music for years, I wasn’t that excited to see them play. OMG. They performed! The stage was beautifully lit, the sound was perfect because the wind had died down, for a while, and they played well into the midnight hour with two encores for a crowd that obviously thought the world of The Cure. It was a good experience and I think I’m a fan of The Cure now; who wouldn’t be?

Alysin, May 30, 04:37 PM:
I love Sasquatch this year. Sunday was the best day. I was torn between Death Cab and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. I stayed for a little Death Cab (left after Soul Meets Body) and went on over the Wookie stage where the Kooks were playing at 8:45 when SM & the Jicks should have been there. (Not that it’s a huge deal, but correction to your blog, Kooks were on Wookie not Yeti) Well, after waiting around for 20 minutes for SM & the Jicks to set up, we stayed for 3 songs because I just wasn’t feeling SM as cute as he is. We went back to the mainstage and Death Cab were off stage and The Cure was setting up and WOW! Yeah, the Cure were amazing. I was impressed with how Robert Smith covered all the synth parts on his guitar. Well done! And they played for almost 3 hours. It was almost 1:00am by the time they were done. Like REM the night before, proof that the old timers still have it going on!
