Grizzly Bear's Latest Out Today

“Veckatimest” by Grizzly Bear is out now. Forget that low-quality leaked onto the Internet in early Spring. The album is on Amazon right now for $3.99! Ridiculously cheap, but if you prefer the physical product, then head out and make a record store happy.

Pitchfork’s review valuted onto the band a 9/10 mark; lest to say, the reviewer liked what he heard. We’ll post a review shortly, once I collect my thoughts after the holiday weekend.

TeachStreet

Here’s a website to match-up with those that have a talent to those that would like to learn (or try to) something. Need someone to teach you French, or a pilates instructor in Portland, OR? TeachStreet is a much less ghetto than Craigslist, there are maps of where the instructors/teachers are located, reviews, and other cool stuff the kids beg for these days.

For example, this dude can teach you French. Beginners only please. Parlez-vous français?

Portland Music Awards This Thursday

The 2nd annual Portland Music Awards are this Thursday, January 29th, at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, OR. Featuring a dozen musical acts and 22 awards, this year’s Portland Music Awards seem to be an improved, amp-ed up version of last year’s inaugural event. It’s at a new venue, Crystal Ballroom, and the event will be broadcast live on KMHD 89.1FM, and taped for television broadcast on February 16th – Comcast OnDemand is where you’ll find it.

A friend of NW Noise, Debra Arlyn will be performing this year – she won best Female Artist last year. Also performing at the event is the band Tea For Julie, who NW Noise interviewed in the Summer of 2008.

Oh Darling's Snow Day Video

Portland got decades-worth of pent-up snow last week. You might have seen the news, or if you lived in Portland you might have caught the local news covering the event non-stop. After a long walk in the show, trying to warm up, I saw that Oh Darling had posted a snow day video to go along with their new single (written in their basement in about a hour) Can’t Wait to Come Home.

News From the Darling Camp

While it also serves as an excuse for me to post another pic of Jasmine and J. Marie, there is some cool news to report about Portland band Oh Darling. Although their album Nice Nice was just released in September, the Darlings are heading down to L.A. next month to record some brand new music. How the music will eventually make its way to our ears remains to be seen, or heard, but I did get a chance to hear a few of the tracks at their in-store performance at Music Millenium last week and the new material is solid. It’s right up there with the ten tracks on Nice Nice, an album that I love.

The Darlings post regular updates on their blog at ohdarlingmusic.com/blog. I’m sure they will keep us posted on their L.A. experience while they are there via their site.

The Thermals Sign to Kill Rock Stars

Record label (and Portland-transplants), Kill Rock Stars, are reported to have signed The Thermals. The band’s fourth album won’t be released on Sub Pop, as it was revealed in July they might be shopping for a new label.

Pitchfork’s short interview with the band also revealed The Thermals are planning their fourth release, Now We Can See, will be officially released on April 7th, but look for promotional tracks, etc. from KRS beginning after winter of next year.

The Thermals are slated to play the Doug Fir on Dec. 5th and 6th.

Halloween with Minmae

Minmae is playing Kelly’s Olympian on Halloween with Jesus Eagle, Chores and Throwback Suburbia. This is Minmae’s first show in what, 5 months, and they are back with a new drummer and bass player, Chris Lay and Josh Heinze. Expect some touring in Spring of ’09 for a soon to be released album, Minmae’s 9th, but who’s counting.

Gus Greif at Vicinato

Some may not find the ukulele particularly sexy, but those people have not seen singer/songwriter Gus Greif, a musician that oozes sexuality from each of his pores while rocking a mean tiny lute (he ain’t too shabby on the guitar either). Gus’ music reflects the laid-back attitude of the small country town near Eugene where he grew up, with hints of Jack Johnson and John Mayer thrown in the mix. Recently relocating from Los Angeles to Portland, Gus brings his vocal stylings and guitar playing to the Vicinato Wine Bar on 46th and Freemont at 8PM. Come check out this talented artist in his second performance since moving back to the Northwest.

Music and Interviews Missing

We had a server problem that caused the removal of recently added Music and Interviews from NW Noise. We’re working on getting this content back up. Sorry about that!
