Not at Sasquatch...but with Blind Pilot
MP3 of I Buried a Bone
Unlike Tim, I was unlucky enough to miss the vaunted festival in lovely George, Washington. So while he limped between stages, dodging showers and quaffing overpriced cups of alcoholic heaven, I turned my attention to the debut release of local band Blind Pilot.
First impressions? When Tim sent me their record, Three Rounds and a Sound, I was hoping for a three Sparks and a walk about town experience. Or maybe a rickshaw ride across the Burnside Bridge. After all, much of my recent aural experience has involved REM’s newest effort (hence my insane jealousy over Tim’s journey north). “Accelerate” definitely sounds like a loud, hazy night full of garish neon lights and haunting declarations…
Blind Pilot, however, is a different kind of animal. From the opening chords of “Go on say it” to the final lilting moments of the title track, Blind Pilot is a crass mix of the best of Bright Eyes and “The Golden Age”-era Beck: songs that drift through ethereal stories and simple, sonorous melodies.
To continue with the misplaced alcohol metaphor, Blind Pilot is that bottle of red wine that makes it through a couple nights, recorked and then finished in the late hours of the weekend. These songs tell stories and evoke moments in time the way that Proust sifts through dreams. Check them out on myspace and later this month with their release on Expunged Records. CD release show at Dante’s on June 21st…
