Spanish for 100 - Say What You Want to Say to Me

MP3 of Attack!

My father would be proud, kind of, in regards to the myspace slogan for Seattle, WA based indie rockers Spanish for 100 which says “Fugazi tackling the Merle Haggard songbook”. He’d mainly connect with the Merle Haggard portion of the headline, and then simply ask me, ‘Fu-what-zi?’

Family shenanigans aside, Say What You Want to Say to Me, the newest release from Spanish for 100, boasts 11 tracks, mixed with rip-roaring compositions, sedate musical musings with electrifying and often times enchanting guitar work from Corey Passons and Aaron Starkey, body-moving bass lines from Ross McGilvray and spot on drumsmanship (a new word I just invented) from Chris Crumpler.

Spanish for 100

Once in earshot, listeners are under attack (literally) from this Spanish for 100 record. The first track, properly titled Attack!, shows of the dueling guitar talents of Passons and Starkey and also reminds this reviewer of something that Jimi Hendrix might have been jealous he didn’t write if he was still with us, while the title track Say What You Want to Say showcases the bands heavy influence from long time psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips and most certainly, their Neil Young influence is showcased in such tracks as See Now, She’s a Robber, and Quick as a Shutter, which also has a little Flaming Lips vibe to it.

This third album from Spanish for 100 was recorded by Seattle based producer Johnny Sangster (The Posies, Mudhoney, Dear John Letters) and mixed by Phil EK (Modest Mouse, The Shins, Built to Spill) who was the producer for the bands’ previous efforts, the full length Newborn Driving (self-released, 2003) and the EP, Metric (Fish the Cat Records, 2006).
